Emilia Romagna Grand Prix – A brief history of F1 at Imola
The Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari is a race track near the Italian city of Imola, 40 kilometers east of Bologna. It is one of the few major international circuits that runs anti-clockwise. The track is named after Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari and his son Alfredo Ferrari. The track is FIA Grade One licensed.
Imola has long been the stage for the San Marino Grand Prix. For years, two grand prixs have been held in Italy every year. Hence, the reason why the race in Imola is named after the nearby state. The circuit also hosted the Italian Grand Prix once, in 1980. Hereafter, the Italian Grand Prix would mainly take place at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. When Formula 1 visits Imola, it is seen as the home circuit of Scuderia Ferrari. Crowds of Tifosi come to the track to support the local team in big numbers.
The recent return of Imola to Formula 1
Imola returns to Formula 1 during the 2020 season to help the sport fill in gaps in the calendar. These are caused by cancellations of other races due to the ongoing pandemic. The race has been renamed beautifully to Formula 1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. This in honor of the region where the circuit is located. It also means that the circuit hosts a World Championship race under a third name, after the Italian Grand Prix (1980) and the San Marino Grand Prix (1981 – 2006).
In 2021, the FIA once again called upon the magnificent circuit to organize a Formula 1 race. Who knows what F1 adventures are still to come for this iconic circuit in 2023 and beyond?
