The Shanghai International Circuit is located in the northwest of Shanghai. It has been home to the Grand Prix® of China since 2004. The 5,451 kilometer circuit, designed by Hermann Tilke and Peter Wahl, is based on the Chinese character for “Shang” (上) meaning “high” or “above”. The circuit contains 16 bends and is characterized by long straights interspersed with long twisters. The 2016 race proves that the Grand Prix® of China is ideally suited for overtaking, where no fewer than 128 successful actions were recorded. This is the highest number since counting began in 1983.
On the Shanghai International Circuit, Red Bull Racing achieved its first-ever Formula 1 victory in 2009. This was with Sebastian Vettel behind the wheel.
