But what is an F1 sprint weekend?
An F1 Sprint is basically a mini race. It is about a third of the distance of the main event and will take about 30 minutes. Drivers are not required to make a pitstop during the sprints. Sprints have their own qualifying session named ‘Sprint Shootout’. Because the Sprint is shorter, there are also less points allocated and only allocated to the top 8. The winner will get 8 points, the person finishing second will get 7, and so on.
What does an F1 Sprint weekend programme look like?
On friday the weekend starts off with a free practice session, just like regular weekends. After this there is the qualifying session for the sprint race. Then first thing on saturday the sprint race is held which is followed by the qualifying session for the main event. Sundays, just like other weekends, the race is held.

The Singapore Grand Prix will hold a Sprint for the first time in 2026. Many fans doubt whether a Sprint works on the streets of Marina Bay, as overtaking has traditionally been very difficult here.
