The 2026 event represents an extraordinary chapter in Formula 1 history. The race is officially called the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, but will take place at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.
The original Bahrain Grand Prix was unable to take place in April 2026. The Sepang International Circuit was subsequently selected to host the race later in the season. The Grand Prix will take place from 2 to 4 October 2026 and has been positioned between the races in Azerbaijan and Singapore on the Formula 1 calendar.
Formula 1 will therefore return to Malaysia for the first time since 2017. Although the race’s official title refers to Bahrain, the entire race weekend will take place in Malaysia.
The Sepang International Circuit is situated near Kuala Lumpur International Airport, approximately 50 kilometres from the centre of Malaysia’s capital. Designed by Hermann Tilke, the circuit hosted its first Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1999.
The circuit is 5.543 kilometres long and features 15 corners. A Formula 1 race at Sepang consists of 56 laps. The layout combines long straights with high-speed corners, heavy braking zones and several slower, technical sections. This gives the drivers opportunities to attack at several points around the circuit and generally produces good overtaking opportunities.
One of the circuit’s most recognisable features is the double-sided Main Grandstand between the two long straights. From selected areas of this grandstand, spectators can watch the Formula 1 cars on both sides.
Sepang’s layout is not its only challenge. The high temperatures and humidity place considerable demands on the drivers, tyres and cars. The weather in Malaysia can also change very quickly.
A warm and sunny day can turn into a tropical downpour within minutes. The large volume of water can completely transform the conditions on the circuit. Teams must therefore prepare for a range of strategies and sudden tyre changes.
This combination of heat, high-speed corners, long straights and unpredictable weather has produced spectacular races in the past. Formula 1’s return to Sepang therefore promises to be one of the most remarkable race weekends of the 2026 season.
