Qatar’s Lusail International Circuit – after MotoGP now also FORMULA 1!

The Qatar Lusail International Circuit is best known for its motorcycle racing bank, with Lusail hosting the MotoGP series since 2004.

As of 2023, the circuit has signed a 10-year contract for a partnership with FORMULA 1. This is a long-term partnership.

In 2021, Qatar became the 34th country to host a race weekend during the Formula 1 World Championship. That year, the country organized the F1 Grand Prix of Qatar.

The Lusail International Circuit

Lusail International Circuit is a racing circuit located just outside the city of Lusail, north of Doha, Qatar.

Built in just under a year, the circuit opened in 2004 for the inaugural Qatar GP.

Moreover, the track is 5,380 meters long, with a straight of 1068 meters. In addition, it is surrounded by artificial grass to prevent the sand from entering the track.

Then, in 2007 Lusail added permanent outdoor lighting for night racing. At the time, the Lusail Circuit lighting was the largest permanent sports lighting project in the world. An award that now belongs to another track nearby: the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Finally, the first night race in MotoGP history was the Commercial Bank Lusail GP race in March 2008.

Throwback to Lusail GP

The first edition of the Lusail GP race took place in 2021. Lewis Hamilton won the race dominantly, followed by Max Verstappen in second place. In 2023, Max Verstappen became world champion. This was during the first race of the new 10-year contract in Qatar. He finished sixth in the sprint race. It was partially due to a disappointing result from teammate Perez. Oscar Piastri won the chaotic sprint race, with Verstappen finishing second. In the end, Verstappen secured the title unchallenged. On Sunday, Verstappen won his 14th race of the season. And that despite the extreme heat, which forced rookie Logan Sargeant to retire.
