The GP of Canada – A brief history of F1 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve sets the stage for the FORMULA 1 Canadian Grand Prix. The location of this track is on the artificial island of Ile Notre-Dame. This is in the St. Lawrence River in Montreal, Quebec. The 4,361-meter long circuit was previously called the Ile Notre-Dame Circuit. However, it is renamed in memorial of public’s favorite, Gilles Villeneuve (1982).

The GP of Canada has been taking place on this circuit since 1978. The same Gilles Villeneuve is responsible for claiming the first victory on its F1 debut. It marks the first and last time that a Canadian claimed the GP of Canada. A second Canadian victory came close for son Jacques Villeneuve in 1996. But a second place that day proved his best career finish on this track.

Past and upcoming races

One of our past memories of the Canada GP involve a great duel that young Max Verstappen (18) fought in 2016 with later World Champion Nico Rosberg (Mercedes). We are in the latter stages of the race and Rosberg managed to close down the gap to Max. Max shows his defensive qualities lap after lap. Eventually, he forces the German driver to make a crucial braking error. This move secured Max’s P4 finish!

We are definitely curious what will happen during 2025’s race. It is sure to be an exciting one, so don’t forget to get your F1 Montreal tickets! We’ll see you at the GP of Canada!
