About the Italian Grand Prix and Monza F1 Circuit

The Italian GP has been around at Monza since the beginning of the official FORMULA 1 world championship in 1950. Except for 1980, when the Italian GP was held once at Imola.
The circuit measures 5,793 meters long and is located in Monza. Monza itself is a good 20 kilometers north of Milan. The track officially has 11 turns, but in fact there are only 4 real bends. The other corner numbers indicate no less than three chicanes. All meant to take the speed out of the track and banish the dangerous slipstream fights of the past. Despite these measures, Monza is still the showcase for high-speed circuits. To illustrate: almost 80% of a lap on this circuit is full throttle in a modern FORMULA 1 car.

F1 at Monza’s The Temple of Speed

Due to the ultra-fast nature of the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, the FORMULA 1 cars are always tuned for minimal drag. This makes it easier to reach high top speeds. However, the downside is that down force is also minimal. As a result, the FORMULA 1 cars slip and slide all over the track. Rubens Barichello holds the lab record, which dates from 2004 with a time of 1:21.046. The average speed of this lap was 257,320 km/h. The international nickname of the circuit “Temple of Speed” is justified.
