Portimão’s debut on the F1® calendar during the F1 Portugal
Portugal has two great F1®-worthy circuits: Estoril and Portimão. Estoril hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix uninterrupted from 1984 to 1996. The circuit, located near the popular seaside resort, was the setting for the legendary Ayrton Senna’s first victory in 1985. This time, however, the FIA has chosen Portimão, a (relatively) new circuit with good facilities. The construction of the circuit was completed in 2008. However, the circuit is rarely used, even though many FORMULA 1® drivers are enthusiastic about the layout. To date, only one FORMULA 1® test session in 2009, and two Grand Prix, in 2020 & 2021, have taken place at this Portuguese circuit.
After a 6-year absence, the Portuguese Grand Prix returns to the F1® calendar in 2027 on the circuit: the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, also known as Portimão. This modern race track is nestled in the rolling hills near the Atlantic coast in the southwest of Portugal. Portimão promises wheel-to-wheel racing action, exceptional panoramic views along the track, and a relaxed holiday atmosphere.

In the immediate vicinity (Algarve), there is also plenty to do outside of FORMULA 1®, from sandy beaches to world-class golf courses, beautiful whitewashed villages, and delicious local fish dishes.
