Japanese Grand Prix – A brief history of F1 at Suzuka

The Japanese Grand Prix has been held on the Suzuka Circuit since 1987. The circuit was built by Honda as a test track in 1962 and was designed by the Dutchman John Hugenholtz. Since then, the circuit has undergone several changes for safety reasons. The circuit is part of Motopia. A large amusement park with swimming pools, golf courses, hotels and a theme park.

FORMULA 1 drivers absolutely adore this track and the great atmosphere surrounding the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. The Japanese FORMULA 1 fans are perhaps the most fanatical supporters in the world. F1 in Japan is therefore really special and unique to its kind.

Because the race in Japan always takes place at the end of the season, there have been several decisions for the title in the past. Especially famous is the iconic battle between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost in 1989. Senna had his teammate Prost retire in 1989. The Brazilian was disqualified and the Frenchman then managed to become world champion. The exact same thing happened a year later, but then Senna became world champion instead of Prost.

Suzuka Circuit

Suzuka Circuit is located 50 kilometers southwest of Nagoya. It is the only circuit on the FORMULA 1 calendar with an 8-shaped layout. The circuit is 5,807 meters long and consists of 18 turns. The challenges of some of these corners, such as the famous 130R and the fast S-turns, provide the FORMULA 1 drivers with plenty of entertainment during the Japanese Grand Prix.

It is also the circuit on which our Dutch pride Max Verstappen, just 17 years old, debuted in a FORMULA 1 car. In 2014, Toro Rosso (now Alpha Tauri) gave Max the opportunity to get used to a FORMULA 1 car. The first free practice is Max’s, and he finishes in a decent 12th place – just 0.3 seconds behind the other Toro Rosso driver.
